The ongoing polar vortex known as the “Beast from the East” arrived in the West Midlands, England, causing water birds to turn into icebreakers as they searched for food in a frozen canal.

Geese were the first ones to break the ice. They used their bodies to swim through the ice. The ducks did the same.

The beast from the east has arrived in the West Midlands, England and the Water birds turn icebreakers. Not too much snow yet, but the canal is frozen. The Canadian geese are the first ones to break the ice in the search for food. They are using their body to swim through the ice. Secondly the ducks are doing the same. Using there chest to break the ice. The little coot has a bit more difficulty, but when it can’t get any further one of them just flies out of the icy, snowy water and lands on the ice and there they continue to search for food.
