Male humpbacks will often hang around a female and act as her escort. Whether they are protecting the female with a newborn calf or are simply waiting to see if she will mate, the reason may vary... However, the males are often very defensive over their escorted females. While he was defensive of the other male, he didn't seem to mind much when we snorkeled with both him and her for about 20 minutes before this occurred.
