Polar Bear on ice near ship - sniffing, then walking away - Nordauslandet
The Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, is the top predator in the Arctic. The males choose to spend most of their lives on the pack ice in the high Arctic, hunting seals, their main prey. However, Polar Bears are also opportunistic scavengers, and will eat a wide variety of other foods, including carrion and human garbage. This huge male approached the ship in the evening, probably attracted by the smell of dinner cooking, or perhaps by the odour of the excited but silent passengers watching him. He raised his head, sampling the smells and sticking out his tongue. He finally concluded that he wasn't getting any food, and wandered off across the pack ice, where he took to the water.
