Great Green Bush-cricket in a Dorset garden

Buy video

The warm climate of England’s southern counties attracts a wide variety of insect life. One of the very largest insects found here is the great green bush-cricket. The one filmed here is a female bush-cricket, as can be seen by the long egg-laying tube or ovipositor at the insect’s rear end. Looking very like a fearsome sting, this organ is in fact quite harmless, being used only to allow the insect to lay its eggs under the soil.
