Two Walrus males emerging from sea and struggling up beach
Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) are the largest seal-like mammals in the European Arctic. These two males, one much larger than the other, were returning cold from the sea to join a group of basking males Walrus on the beach at Kapp Lee on Edgeøya in the Svalbard Archipelago. For some reason the larger male kept bellowing at the smaller male, which kept its distance. Both animals struggled clumsily to heave their huge bodies up onto the beach and had frequent rest breaks.
