Storm Eleanor hits New Brighton. A large 9.8m tide produces some impressive waves at the mouth of the River Mersey which crash over the Promenade and threatens the Black Pearl Pirate Ship.
New Brighton is a seaside resort at the North-East tip of the Wirral Peninsula on Merseyside. It is bordered by the world famous River Mersey, the marine commercial river that feeds neighbouring Liverpool, and the Irish Sea. On Wednesday 3rd January 2018, Storm Eleanor having crossed the Atlantic, hit the coast at the same time as one of the highest tides of the month, 9.8 metres, and brought waves crashing over the sea walls. The well known driftwood pirate ship, The Black Pearl bravely withstood the storm to 'sail' another day.
