Accident victim’s severed leg used as pillow in Indian hospital
A road accident victim’s severed leg was used as a pillow recently to prop up his head in a government-run hospital in India.
The incident occurred at Maharani Laxmi Bai Jhansi Medical College in Jhansi, India, on February 10.
The victim, Ghanshyam, 28, worked as an assistant at a school bus, which met with an accident near Jhansi.
The bus owned by Deepak Memorial School overturned as the driver tried to avoid a collision with a tractor.
Nearly a dozen children were injured and Ghanshyam lost his leg in the accident.
He was sent to Jhansi medical college after first aid at a local health centre.
A few relatives of Ghanshyam accompanied him to the medical college carrying the severed leg with them.
Dr Sadhna Kaushik, principal of the medical college, initially blamed a ‘patients attendant’ for placing the leg under Ghanshyam’s head.
“The patient’s attendant did not give the severed limb to doctors when medico-legal formalities were done. The attendant then placed it under his head when he asked for a prop,” she said.
But Ghanshyam’s mother Devki told reporters that a doctor had put the leg under his head as a pillow was not available.
After local media picked up the story and the incident triggered an outrage, senior officials formed a four-member committee to probe the incident.
They also suspended four staff members including, a senior orthopaedic doctor, who was on duty.
