More than 100 whales died after washing ashore in Western Australia today (March 23).

Heartbreaking footage shows dozens of pilot whales lying dead on the sand in Hamelin Bay as a group of people try to revive some of the mammals by throwing water to them.

According to local reports, only seven of all the stranded pilot whales had survived.

Experts and authorities say these pilot whales are known for beaching themselves but they don't know the reasons for this rare behaviour.

A shocking sight at Hamelin Bay. More than a 150 whales beached themselves. Despite efforts to return them to the ocean, only 7 survived.
And bizarrely, the same thing happened on the same beach nine years ago to the day.
