Male Lion marking his territory after mating

The Lion (Panthera leo) is an iconic animal to see in Kruger Park, South Africa, and is a major attraction. We came across this pair of mating Lions at dusk in the middle of the Mphongolo Loop on the edge of the Mphongolo River in northern Kruger. The pair was not disturbed by our arrival, and instead mated briefly right in front of us.

After mating the male moved to the edge of the dirt road and scratched the dirt with his hind feet to mark his territory. He then defecated, moved back to his mate and the pair then moved off to watch the sunset from the river bank.

Mating lions leave the pride and spend at least several days together, mating frequently.
