Buffalo herd sniffing remains of a young buffalo killed by lions - closer

The African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a very large, dangerous animal in the same family as domestic cattle. African Buffalo form large herds mainly made up of related females that move large distances in search of water and suitable grass to graze.

Buffaloes show a high degree of social organisation and respond to distress calls of others when threatened by predators, particularly lions, by mobbing and sometimes killing the predator. This mainly female herd had lost one of its young to a pride of lions and seemed to be paying respect to the dead calf by approaching and sniffing its remains before moving off.
