Young Hyaena resting its head by den in culvert - closer view
The Spotted Hyaena (or Hyena), Crocuta crocuta is a large carnivore with a wide distribution in the savanna regions of Africa. Hyaenas have complex societies and live in female-dominated groups or clans usually of 3-15 individuals, although greater numbers have been recorded.
Cubs are born with soft, blackish hair and shelter in dens that may be dug by the clan, or more commonly are the abandoned burrows of other animals or even human structures such as drainage culverts under roads. The dens have large bare areas around the entrance where Hyaenas lie and females suckle their cubs.
This cub was lying by the entrance to its den waiting for the adults to return. It is resting its head on the edge of the concrete culvert.
