Buy video

The Roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is a savanna antelope found in West, Central, East and Southern Africa. Roan are one of the rarest antelopes – they are very uncommon in Kruger Park and it is a privilege to see them. They occur in harem groups of 5-15 animals with a dominant male.

Roan occur in woodland and grassland savanna and mostly eat mid-length grasses, but in times of drought will browse on the leaves of shrubs such as the leguminous Apple-leaf or Rain Tree, Philenoptera violacea.

This small herd was browsing on Apple-leaf leaves during the 2016 drought in Kruger Park, and then crossed the road near us and disappeared.
