A woman was spotted carrying her disabled husband on her back in India.

The couple was on their way to get a disability certificate from the Chief Medical Officer’s office in Mathura in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which would entitle the man to get a free wheelchair from the government.

Bimla Devi, 34, said she was forced to carry her husband, Badan, 42, as they did not have money to hire transport.

Bimla also disclosed that they had made three trips to the CMO's office to get the certificate. But they were unable to get the certificate as they encountered a new bureaucratic hurdle during each visit.

“It takes four hours to reach CMO’s office from our home,” said Bimla in an interview on April 4.

The incident caused an uproar after the local media picked up the story. The government officials rushed to the aid of the couple and Badan was given a wheelchair on April 6.

Badan, who worked as a truck driver, lost a leg last year after it turned gangrenous and had to be amputated.

Bimla said the couple went broke after spending the equivalent of nearly $11,000 on his treatment.
