Huge sheets of ice broke off of the Big Sioux River in South Dakota on April 2.

In the video, massive sheets of ice can be seen breaking off the Big Sioux River as they fall over a dam.

“The ice coming off from the Big Sioux River located in eastern South Dakota is an annual event,” the filmer said. “However, it’s unusual to have somebody there to film it.”

This video was shot at 5:06 PM Monday, April 2 in Flandreau South Dakota when the ice finally let loose from the river bank upstream, the ice came over the dam located in the community. Roger Janssen who lives next to the structure has seen this event many times but this is the first time that he has actually recorded and shared the event. Spring is coming late to the upper plains states, the ice often times goes off in March.
