A ten-year-old giraffe named Hairong died after getting his neck trapped in between two tree branches when he tried to scratch an itch in Kunming Zoo on April 16.

Video shows zoo staff reaching Hairong's head via a ladder and using an electric saw to cut a tree branch.

After his neck is freed, the giraffe falls awkwardly to the ground.

Chinese media did not report whether or not this was the moment of death.

After his fall, staff use a ladder to support his head and try to help him get back on its feet.

Hairong died from his severe neck injuries.

According to local reports, the giraffe had lived in the zoo for five years and he used to scratch his itches in between the tree branches but had never got stuck until now.
