Black grouse fighting on their lekking grounds in Cumbria

The black grouse is one of only three British bird species that exhibit lekking behaviour.

This interesting phenomenon involves black grouse males displaying on a traditional lekking site. This lek I regularly watch in the North Pennines usually has about 5 males in total.

The males compete by fighting with each other for best display sites within the lek, with dominant individuals occupying central sites. The bubbling calls and the posturing attract hens, who choose their mate. The dominant males in the central part of the lek obtain most of the females attention.

Filmed in the North Pennines Cumbria on the 12th of April 2018
