An amazing Flap-necked Chameleon hunting on a tree

The Flap-necked Chameleon, Chamaeleo dilepis, is common in Kruger Park, South Africa. It is quite a large lizard, reaching about 140 mm (5.5 inches). Chameleons are famous for being able to rapidly change colour in response to their emotional state or to match the colour of their background.

In this sequence of clips shot in Letaba Restcamp, Kruger Park the chameleon is slowly climbing up the trunk of an Umbrella Thorn, looking for food. Chameleons are able to move and focus each eye independently - you can see this happening.

Its background colour was grey-brown on the bark of the thorn, then changed to green-brown as it climbed amongst the leaves. It caught then swallowed a large grasshopper.
