Hyena unexpectedly approaches safari vehicle during fight for food

This video shows a clan of hyenas feasting on a dead buffalo and the internal fighting that takes place during this feeding frenzy. It was during the severe drought in 2017 in the Kruger National Park when many animals such as buffalo starved to death due to insufficient supply of grass. These tough times for grazing animals turned into the good times for predators such as hyenas. Roughly fifteen hyenas gathered around this carcass and each hyena competed for its own fair share of the prized meal. Inevitably tempers would flare and individuals would take on each other in a quick scuffle which involved a lot of biting followed by snarling, giggling, yelling and whining sounds and noises. Suddenly one hyena that was driven away from the carcass became focused on our safari vehicle and unexpectedly walked straight towards us. We found it very strange for a hyena so involved with feeding and fighting to be amused by our vehicle in some or other way. This made us wonder what this hyena’s intentions were. As he approached the driver’s door, a quick bang on the door was all that was needed to give this hyena a fright in order for him to move away. We did not feel safe with it getting so close to the vehicle. He still went and stood in front of the vehicle and stared at us for a bit before he joined the feeding frenzy again. It was a bizarre experience and a rare occasion to see such uncommon behaviour.
