Spooky Brocken Spectre on Mallerstang Edge Cumbria

Buy video

While filming the low clouds on Mallerstang edge this morning, the rising sun shining on my back cast my shadow onto the clouds below to create this phenomena called a Brocken spectre.

The "spectre" appears when the sun shines from behind you, and looking down from a ridge into the mist . The light projects your shadow through the mist making you appear as if you are 20 foot tall. A halo effect almost like a rainbow can be seen surrounding the figures head caused by the water droplets in the mist when sunlight meets a cloud of uniformly-sized water droplets.

The phenomenon draws its name from the Brocken, a peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany The Brocken spectre was observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780, and has since been recorded often in literature about the region.

This is a natural phenomena no fancy editing done to the video

Filmed on Mallerstang edge Cumbria on the 20th of April 2018
