This warthog decided to have a very satisfying scratch of his bum once all his mates left the scene.

Footage filmed on April 9 in Kruger National Park, South Africa, shows a warthog thrashing around in mud before dragging his behind along the ground.

The animal certainly looks satisfied – but was unaware he was being observed by a jeep-full of tourists.

It was on a late afternoon safari when we came across this warthog seen in the video, covered in mud at a watering hole in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. We decided to stop and observe this fellow for a few minutes. He was having the time of his life. After a good roll around in the mud, the warthog started rubbing his bum very enthusiastically in the mud backwards and forward. This made for real entertaining viewing and we all had a good laugh. One could just imagine how much relief there must have been for this warthog with his itchy bum. It seemed like he just absolutely loved it. The phrase ‘as happy as a pig in mud’ came to mind a few times. Because warthogs have typically hairless bodies, they regularly take a mud bath. Wallowing in the mud help regulate their body temperature on hot days. The thermoregulatory ‘bath’ also aids in parasite removal. Warthogs are prone to rubbing themselves on any convenient place like a wooden post, rock or just in the mud. Ticks and parasites are encrusted by the mud and by rubbing and scratching their itchy body parts they get rid of it in that way.
