Daring vulture carefully steals quick bite from male lion's kill

While on safari in the Kruger National Park, South Africa, we came across a big male lion feeding on a buffalo carcass. After gorging himself on buffalo meat for the past few days, the male lion looks absolutely shattered. He is panting profusely and can barely keep his eyes open. Hundreds of vultures are sitting around in nearby trees, patiently waiting for the king of beasts to eventually abandon his kill before they move in to feed on the leftover meat. Under normal circumstances, vultures that do attempt to approach a kill when lions are still present, will get chased off relentlessly or even killed at times. This is normal behaviour between these two different species competing for the same food. Suddenly we notice one very fearless and daring hooded-vulture, slowly moving closer and closer to the lion and his kill. The male lion surprisingly does not move or even react to the vulture’s bold attempt to steal some of his food. He looks at the meat and then at the lion repeatedly. The large bird shows patience but looks very nervous at the same time. It gets within a couple of meters from the big male lion. The lion still just looks at the vulture while panting away. The vulture then amazingly follows through with his intentions and manages to get a quick couple of bites from the male lion’s kill. We were totally amused and impressed when this vulture pulled off his daring attempt while hundreds of other vultures were just sitting around waiting. This vulture proofed that with patience and a fearless attitude anything is possible no matter how scary or big the challenge
