Sand snake kills then swallows lizard whole

Buy video

This footage was captured in a Wilderness Camp in Kruger National Park, South Africa. While walking down a pathway in camp we suddenly came across a snake lying on the side of the pathway. The snake was identified as a Western Stripe - bellied Sand Snake. What made this find even more amusing was the fact that this snake managed to hunt down a reptile called a rainbow skink lizard. The video shows how the snake bites the lizard, injecting it with venom and patiently waiting for it to die. These snakes are not venomous enough to kill a human, though enough to kill small prey such as this lizard. The video clearly shows the last few last kicks from the lizard before the venom took over and killed the reptile. Once the lizard was dead the snake proceeded to swallow it whole, bit by bit. After the snake finished its meal, he slowly moved across the path and disappeared into the bush. We could clearly see the bulging part where the lizard was lying down the middle inside the snake’s belly. With a meal of this size, the sand snake will be able to go without food again for at least another two months. These types of hunts and kills take place on a daily basis but are rarely seen by humans as majority of reptiles especially snakes are very shy and elusive. It was fascinating to have found this event playing off right in front of us right inside our camp.
