Prominent bird performs his iconic call of the African bush

During a late afternoon safari in the Kruger National Park, our guide stopped the vehicle and got all our attention focused on a single bird standing on top of a termite mound. This bird is called a Swainson’s spurfowl, a chicken-sized brownish bird with a very distinctive bright red face and throat. These birds are quite common in the Kruger National Park and other protected bushveld areas in Southern Africa. Even better known is the bird’s very distinctive call that is iconic to the African bush, especially at dawn and at dusk. They mostly call while perched conspicuously on a tree stump, termite mound or any other elevated spot. Our guide pointed out that this spurfowl was about to perform his call while standing up on the mound. Sure thing the bird lifts his head and started calling right in front of us. The male bird calls loudly with a harsh crowing, krrraa krrraa krrraa, repeated 4-6 times and reducing in volume towards end of the series. It was amazing to actually see the bird performing the call the one mostly only hear echoing through the bush during mornings and late afternoons
