The Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis) is one of Africa’s most beautiful birds. Woodland Kingfishers migrate to Kruger Park in South Africa during the rainy season to breed, and their descending trilling calls are heard throughout the park, particularly in forest along waterways. They have a wonderful courtship and territorial display in which the turquoise and black wings are spread, revealing the white feathers beneath the wings. Woodland Kingfishers mainly eat insects that they catch by hawking from their perch, then returning to eat their prey.
