Africa's HUGE insects – a Bark Katydid near my sunglasses!

The Bark Katydid (Cymatomera denticollis) is a very large (55 mm or 2-inch long) grasshopper that beautifully mimics bark and lichen. My sunglasses provide a scale showing its large size. The Bark Katydid is widespread in north-eastern South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and northern Namibia. The Bark Katydid is nocturnal – this one was attracted to lights at night in the Crocodile Bridge
Restcamp in Kruger Park and was crawling around looking for somewhere to hide when daylight came. When alarmed, Bark Katydids raise their wings to expose the brightly coloured abdomen beneath them.
