The African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the world’s largest terrestrial mammal with bulls weighing up to 6,300 kg. They live for 60-70 years and the tusks of bulls grow throughout their lives sometimes approaching up to 100 kg each in weight. Bull elephants sometimes associate. In this sequence of clips, two young bull elephants were standing in the shallow river, stripping leaves and bark from a Sycamore Fig tree that had fallen into the Luvuvhu River in northern Kruger Park. They reached up with their trunks to grab branches to break off and used their tusks to prise off pieces of bark and soft green wood to eat. The scars made by their tusks on the tree branches are plain to see.
