An injured sloth bear mauled a man to death near a forest in Nabaragpur in Odisha, India.

Prabhu Bhatra, a truck driver, was attacked by the bear when he was trying to take a selfie after getting down from his vehicle, said media reports.

However, a few other reports said Bhatra had got down from his two wheeler to attend nature’s call when he came under attack.

Though a few onlookers tried to save Bhatra, the animal refused to let him go and continued to maul him till he died.

A video taken by a local villager captured the gory attack on the hapless man.

The bear refused to leave the spot even after Bhatra died. Forest officials rushed to the area and had to tranquilize the bear before they could recover the dead body.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to Bhatra’s family.

Local villagers have urged the officials to take measures to reduce incidents of bear-human conflict in the area.
