The Australian Wood Duck (or Maned Goose, Chenonetta jubata) is a common, medium-sized duck with elegant brown, grey, black and white plumage. They are widespread throughout Australia, avoiding only the driest deserts. Wood Ducks are monogamous, usually breeding above the ground in tree holes. Tree Ducks mostly graze on short grasses and soft herbs. The male has a reddish-brown head with a small dark mane and the female has a paler brown head with a pale stripe above and below the eye. These birds were grazing on the lawn at Yanchep National Park in Western Australia, and then entered the shallows of Loch McNess to bathe and to drink.
