A 5ft long monitor lizard is caught after raiding a pensioner's home for food then trying to hide under pieces of wood.

The reptile was caught rampaging through the home of Sawang Suwan Kosit, 79, last Tuesday (15/09) in Chachoengsao, Thailand.

Rescue workers arrived and tried to snare the beast but it scampered away down the side of the house and crawled under pieces of wood.

Lasso ropes were not sufficient to drag the lizard out - and a local had to stand on the creature's back while strapping shut its jaws.

Sawang said: ''My house is next to a canal and monitor lizards often come inside to try and find food.

''Normally I can chase them away but this one was too big. He would not leave so I had to call for help.''

The animal was stuffed into a sack and driven several miles away to be released back in to the wild.
