The Western Grey Kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) is the most widespread and abundant of all of the large kangaroo species in Australia. The genus name Macropus means ‘big foot’. Western Grey Kangaroos are most active from late afternoon until the early morning, and rest during the day in the shelter of shrubs and trees. They usually dig a hole for their hip to make themselves more comfortable while resting. Yanchep National Park Western Australia supports a large population of these beautiful marsupials. Baby mouse-sized kangaroos (or joeys) are born after just 30 days gestation and climb unaided into their mother’s pouch. Joeys complete their development in the pouch and emerge after about 280 days, remaining with their mother and suckling until about 17 months old. The large joey has his head in his mother’s pouch, suckling while she waits patiently.
