This is the shocking moment a tourist is attacked after allegedly getting caught with a drunk local's wife.

The holidaymaker had reportedly been walking home with the girl outside a nightclub in the red light district of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, at 6 am.

But her jealous husband spotted her with the western man and accused her of cheating on him - before throwing several punches at her.

The tourist steps between them to stem the blows but falls over and is set upon by several local cabbies who repeatedly punch him.

The scene unfolded outside the Pontoon nightclub where hundreds of Cambodian prostitutes attend every night looking for customers.

Witnesses said the woman had met the tourist after having an argument with her husband and going out partying. He saw them together and became angry.

The scuffle eventually passed but police are now investigating the fight.

Phnom Penh police chief, General Chuon Sovann, said that after seeing the video clip he ordered an inquiry to identify all of the perpetrators.

He added: ''I ordered district police to handle this case yesterday after I saw the video clip.''

Deputy police chief Khuon Nguon said that police are cooperating with other unnamed officials to solve the matter.
