A caring mother elephant helped her struggling baby out of a river in Kruger National Park in South Africa.

In the video, a baby elephant can be seen slipping in the mud as he tries to climb out of a river.

His mother comes up behind and nudges him with her trunk until he is safely on dry land.

“Elephants are extremely social and caring of one another, especially of their young,” the filmer said. “Seeing such incredible caring and kind behavior between mother and baby was a truly amazing and inspirational experience.”

While exploring a wilderness area of the Kruger National Park we stopped to watch a herd of elephants crossing through a river. Even though the river was not very deep, it still posed a huge challenge for the baby elephants that was part of the herd. The video shows one specific male baby elephant moving through the river closely followed by his mother. With a few stumbles the baby elephant finally makes it to the other side. The rest of the herd made their way out of the river by climbing up a steep and slippery embankment. The baby elephant followed their path and this was where the real challenge started. He attempts to use his front legs to pull himself up the bank but those little legs are way too short and the river bank too slippery. In an amusing manner the baby elephant slips and slides while struggling to get a grip with his front legs. Right behind him was his watchful mother, ready to help her struggling baby. She gently places her trunk against his backside and kindly pushes her baby from behind slowly up the bank. With a final upwards throw of the head the mother elephant manages to help her baby onto dry land. Immediately the youngster runs forward while his mother gets up the embankment making it look real easy. Elephants are extremely social and caring of one another, especially their young. Seeing such incredible caring and kind behaviour between mother and baby was a truly amazing and inspirational experience.
