SAVANNAH SEES COLOR FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH ENCHROMA COLORBLIND GLASSES

I found out I was colorblind when I was 7 years old. We always knew my dad was colorblind, but one day my mom and dad sat down at the kitchen table to have him take the colorblind test, just for fun. The tests are made up of images or numbers shown in circular clusters of colored dots. People who are colorblind are not able to see the images or numbers. I was in the other room, and my mom called to me saying, "Savannah! Dad can't see the sailboat!" I walked into the kitchen, looked at the test and said, "What sailboat?" Shortly after, I visited my Ophthalmologist. He confirmed that I was, in fact, colorblind. This was interesting because only .04% of girls are colorblind. From that moment on, I became fascinated with eyes. I always loved learning about the eyes and how colorblindness works. Now, as a college student at the University of Oklahoma, my major is Biology Pre-Med. I hope to be an Ophthalmologist one day. Part of me likes being a colorblind girl because it is so rare, and I always have a good fun fact for ice breaker games; however, sometimes it is sad that I cannot see the world in the same way everyone else can. For example, I could only see yellow and blue in a rainbow, and missed out on many of the beautiful colors of fall leaves and spring flowers. Sometimes my colorblindness has led to funny, yet embarrassing stories. Once, I attended a breakfast filled with senators, politicians, past governors and more with pink eyebrows because I had mistaken my pink liquid matte lipstick for eyebrow filler, and couldn't notice the difference. Ha! For many years I have been looking into buying a pair of these Enchroma colorblind glasses. I told my parents about them and finally received them as a gift on my 20th birthday. The next day, my mom, dad, brother, sister, and I drove to downtown Oklahoma City to an area with many colorful walls so that I could try on the glasses. As you can see in the video, I let my dad try on the colorblind glasses as well. My sister videoed our reactions and put this video together. Both my dad and I were amazed by all of the beautiful colors. We both were especially shocked by the true reds and pinks. I am so excited that I have these glasses and a fun video to remember that special day when I saw true color for the first time. Many of my friends have seen the video, and countless people have told me that they cried while watching it. I am just happy to show the world about the cool steps we are taking in science, while also reminding people to be thankful for the little things in life, like seeing color. Thank you for watching my video and for contacting me!
