A mother Hippo, her tiny calf and Nile Crocodiles - clip 10
This Hippo cow and her new calf were resting on the water’s edge on the bank of the Mphongolo River in Kruger Park, South Africa with three Nile Crocodiles close by. One Crocodile was trying to swallow a large fish – the other crocs wanted the fish and tried to steal it. The mother Hippo was very protective of her tiny calf and chased the crocodiles away when they came too close. The Crocodiles were very wary of the mother Hippo. On several occasions Red-billed Oxpeckers landed on the female Hippo’s back to glean parasites for food. The drama played out over about 20 minutes, and the video clips should be played in sequence.
