An underage Chinese boy filmed his own scooter crash while riding with two friends, landing all three in hospital.

The video, filmed in Shaoyang CIty in southern China's Hunan Province on April 22, shows three boys - thought to be around 11 or 12 years old - driving a scooter on a road while recording a selfie.

However, the scooter suddenly loses control after the underage driver adjusts his hair and turns to look at the camera.

The scooter veers to the side of the road and then crashes.

None of the boys are wearing helmets.

According to reports, the legal age to ride a scooter in China is 18 and only one passenger below the age of 12 is allowed.

More than a quarter of a million people die in China every year as a result of road accidents, according to World Health Organization estimates.

Sixty percent of those involve "vulnerable" road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and people on motorcycles, according to the WHO.
