A young male Lion panting in shade - longer side-on view

Buy video

This young male Lion (Panthera leo) was lying in the shade near the water tank supplying the drinking trough at the Lamont Waterhole in Kruger Park on a 40-degree Celsius (104-degree Fahrenheit) day. Kruger Park was in drought, and its mammals and birds were desperate for food, shade and water. This young male Lion’s mane is not fully developed and he still has the juvenile spots on his belly and legs. You can hear him panting to cool off – we were only about 3 metres (10 feet) from him – he didn’t care!
