The Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) is a threatened, turkey-sized, mainly terrestrial hornbill found in southern and parts of East Africa. Ground Hornbills are usually seen in small family groups and move like undertakers through the bush scanning the ground for prey. They spear prey with their formidable black beaks, and often toss it into the air before catching and swallowing it. This male Southern Ground Hornbill was searching for large grubs on the ground and carried several of them together in his beak. He then deposited them on the ground and resumed hunting, eating several grubs before returning to his cache, which he picked up again in his beak.
