The Klipspringer (Afrikaans for ‘Rock Jumper’) is a small stocky antelope with coarse, spiny hair. Klipspringers (Oreotragus oreotragus) are widely distributed but are restricted to rocky habitats. They occur in pairs or small family groups and mostly browse on shrubs although they sometimes eat grass in the wet season. They are extremely agile and can move rapidly across very steep and rocky terrain – this gives them good protection from predators such as leopards. Only the rams have horns, and are territorial, marking twigs with the secretions from their preorbital gland – the large dark area in front of the eye. Klipspringers stand on the tips of their hoofs – it’s almost as though they are wearing stiletto heels! This pair of Klipspringers was on a boulder-strewn cliff near Goedgegun Waterhole in Kruger Park, South Africa. The male Klipspringer was bothered by flies so he stamped several times to repel them and twitched his skin.
