The Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a member of the pig family – its name refers to the ‘warts’ on its face. Warthogs have two pairs of tusks that protrude from the mouth and curve upwards, as well as a mane of coarse hair running down the spine. Warthogs are the only pig adapted to savanna and are omnivorous, taking a wide range of foods including fresh grass, roots, fruits, insects and even carrion. Warthogs are active by day, retreating to their burrows at night. This sow and her large young were lying in the shade, attempting to escape the November heat in Kruger Park, South Africa.
