A pro-choice campaigner swallowed what is claimed to be an abortion pill at a protest in Northern Ireland.

In a video filmed today (May 31) outside Belfast's Laganside courts, a small robot is seen carrying the pills, one of which is taken by a protester.

Women are heard chanting “We won’t take it anymore” over megaphones.

Police later confiscated the pills and the robot.

The demonstration comes just days after voters in the Republic of Ireland voted to relax abortion laws following a historic referendum.

Access to abortion in Northern Ireland, however, is still limited.

Pro-choice socialist feminist activists are demanding the UK government legislate for abortion in Northern Ireland which has some of the strictest laws in the world. At abortions are only performed in very limited circumstance, where a woman’s life is at risk. Following the Republic of Ireland’s vote to repeal the eighth amendment of the Irish constitution, pro-choice activists took abortion pills in Belfast to demand Theresa May legislate for abortion in line with the rest of the UK. When the Republic’s abortion laws are introduced it means British and Irish citizens living in Northern Ireland will be living in the only region of Britain and Ireland where they do not have access to the same services as Irish citizens in the Republic and British citizens in Scotland, England and Wales.
