Mean old bull Buffaloes stopping Giraffes from getting to the waterhole

The African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a very large, dangerous animal in the same family as domestic cattle. Old bull Buffaloes (called ‘Dagga Boys’ in South Africa) are often seen together in small groups, usually close to water. They have left the herd because they can no longer compete with younger bulls. Male African Buffaloes are unpredictable and are often irritable. These Dagga Boys were lying in a muddy, water-filled wallow excavated by Elephants on a very windy, hot day during the 2016 drought in Kruger Park. Two thirsty Giraffes approached the wallow wanting to drink but were driven off by one of the old Buffalo bulls. The two Giraffes moved further along, hoping to get to the waterhole to drink but two old bull Buffaloes stood watching them and the Giraffes would not move any closer.
