The African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a very large, dangerous animal in the same family as domestic cattle. Old bull Buffaloes (called ‘Dagga Boys’ in South Africa) are often seen together in small groups, usually close to water. They have left the herd because they can no longer compete with younger bulls. Male African Buffaloes are unpredictable and are often irritable. Buffaloes love being in mud and water and these Dagga Boys were lying in a muddy, water-filled wallow excavated by Elephants on a very windy, hot day during the 2016 drought in Kruger Park, chewing their cuds.
