Kelp Gull perching on a boulder, Ushuaia Harbour, Argentina
The Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus dominicanus) is a common resident along the east and west coasts of South America, with its range extending to the Falkland Islands and South Georgia as well as Australia and New Zealand. Another subspecies (Larus dominicanus austrinus) is found in Antarctica and the Antarctic Islands. Kelp Gulls are large – ranging in length from 54 to 65 centimetres (21 to 26 inches) with wingspans up to 142 centimetres (56 inches). Like most gulls, Kelp Gulls are predators and scavengers and frequent landfill sites, coastal settlements and seabird rookeries where they take both eggs and chicks. This Kelp Gull is perching on a boulder on the breakwater at Ushuaia Harbour, Argentina in Tierra del Fuego.
