Male Dung Beetle rolling his dung ball, losing control of it, and starting over again

Buy video

This male and female Spider Dung Beetle (Sisyphus species) are rolling their ball of fresh dung to bury it and lay a single egg on it in the southern part of Kruger Park South Africa. The female beetle is perched on top of the dung ball while the male tries valiantly to roll it up a steep sandy slope. Like Sisyphus in the ancient Greek myth, he loses control of the dung ball which rolls back down the slope so he has to start rolling it up hill all over again.
