The Black Heron (Egretta ardesiaca) also known as the Black Egret, occurs patchily throughout sub-Saharan Africa - it is rare in Kruger Park. Black Herons are elegant birds with their slaty grey-black plumage and bright yellow feet on their black legs. The Black Heron is famous for using its wings to form a canopy to create shade that attracts small fish, as this bird is doing. Black Herons prefer well-vegetated open water habitats such as the margins of freshwater ponds and lakes. This bird was fishing upstream of the Sabie River Causeway in Kruger Park in the calm shallows formed by the barrier across the river.
