The African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the world’s largest terrestrial mammal with bulls weighing up to 6,300 kg. They live for 60-70 years and the tusks of bulls grow throughout their lives sometimes approaching up to 100 kg each in weight. The Crocodile Bridge Restcamp in Kruger National Park is situated on the southern boundary of the park on the edge of the mighty Crocodile River. Elephants frequent the Crocodile River valley – it is a reliable source of water and green vegetation for them. The Crocodile River valley Elephants are used to people and come right up to the electric fence on the southern boundary of the camp, sometimes reaching over it to harvest leaves with their trunks. This old bull Elephant was feeding on freshly sprouted grass at the base of the electric fence and paid no attention to people watching him from only a few feet away.
