A male Giraffe following a female on heat in the savanna

The Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is a kind of antelope and is the world’s tallest land mammal. Giraffes are ruminants and chew the cud like cattle. When female Giraffes become fertile older males compete to mate with them. This male (the taller, darker Giraffe) is closely guarding the shorter, paler female who is on heat (or in oestrus). He moved with her whenever she moved, and stood patiently next to her when she stopped, chewing her cud. This pair of Giraffes were near the Crocodile Bridge Restcamp in southern Kruger National Park, South Africa.
