Grey reef shark swimming through lush coral reef

A grey reef shark is swimming slowly though a stunning and healthy coral reef in Raja Ampat in Indonesia.

Sharks are apex predators and play an important role in the marine ecosystem.
Taking out the sharks of coral reefs leads to an increase of other larger predatory fish, such as groupers, that feed on the herbivores. With less herbivores, macroalgae expands and coral can no longer compete, shifting the ecosystem to one of algae dominance, affecting the survival of the reef system.
