Antlion hunts beetle in fascinating manner

Buy video

Antlions are one of the most fascinating insect species found in the Kruger National Park. They are part of the lacewing family. The adult form which resembles a dainty dragonfly looks completely different to the antlion which is the larval form. Antlions have a rounded abdomen and large pincer-like mouthparts. The larvae are predatory and are found in the soil. Antlion larvae will typically form conical pits in soft sand. These pits are constructed by circling backwards into the sand and then anchoring themselves at the bottom of the pit with backwards facing hairs. There they lie and wait for prey, especially ants. When they fall into the pit, the collapsible sides of the pit make it difficult to escape. Even though ants make up majority of food supply, there are rare occasions when different types of prey will fall into the pit of an antlion. They do not discriminate and if they can keep it in their pit they will feed on it. The video shows an antlion busy hunting and then feeding on a small ground beetle the fell into its pit. The beetle attempts in vain to get out of the pit with the sand collapsing on the sides of the pit. The antlion displays another hunting technique by flicking sand onto the struggling beetle to further impair its escape. The antlion then grabs the prey with its pincer-like mouthparts that act like hypodermic needles to suck the liquid out of its prey. Eventually the beetle is sucked dry during the battle and it dies. The antlion then proceeds to pull the beetle under the sand where it will finish to feed and dispose the empty skeleton
