During our stay at a rest camp in Kruger National Park we were fortunate enough to witness a rarely seen encounter between five African wild dogs and a clan of hyenas. It was literally minutes after sunset when we suddenly received a message from friends that African wild dogs were hunting down an impala in front of the camp. We decided to grab our cameras and investigate. A nearby clan of hyenas also heard the commotion and by the time we got to the front of the camp, ten plus hyenas already rushed in to steal the kill from the five wild dogs. Hyenas are commonly known as scavengers but they are equally as much obsessive kleptomaniacs with an irresistible impulse to steal from other predators, especially wild dogs and leopards. The wild dogs were totally outnumbered and stood and watched how the hyenas devoured their kill. Eventually the wild dogs attempted to move closer and reclaim anything that might be left of their kill. The hyenas were just too many and kept the wild dogs at bay. One wild dog even approached a hyena to bite it on the bum. The wild dogs manage to sneak in and get a few bites of left over scraps lying around. In the end, their attempts to reclaim their stolen kill was all in vain, and finally the wild dogs had to admit defeat and move on. We were totally amazed by this rarely seen interaction while at the same time realizing that it will be very unlikely for us to witness something like that again.
